Janet Zhang

Janet is a Senior Consultant at Upstream Partners with expertise in financial and investment analysis. Janet has extensive experience in the valuation of businesses and intellectual property (IP) assets for various contexts, including transaction advisory, business planning, investment capital raising, licensing strategies development, and financial reporting. Janet is experienced in economic consulting for IP matters, providing litigation support in financial damages, valuation, and licensing across a range of technology and market areas. Examples of Janet’s work include the following projects:

Portfolio valuation for private investment firm: Led the development of financial and valuation models, including decision tree analysis, for several intellectual property (IP) litigation funding portfolios of a private investment firm with over $3.5 billion in capital commitments.

Patent damages for cellular technology: Conducted damages analysis for a patent infringement matter related to cellular power control technology, including financial modeling, economic contribution assessment, and apportionment calculations, which resulted in a jury award of $111 million.

Company and intellectual property (IP) valuation: Performed valuation of a technology company and of its IP assets related to connectivity and security, informing monetization strategy and the decision making of a company with over 10 issued patents and commercial presence across more than 70 countries.

Patent damages for specialty chemicals: Evaluated potential economic harm due to the entry of an allegedly infringing specialty chemical product, including lost profits and reasonable royalty damages.

Prior to Upstream, Janet was an Equity Research Associate at J.P. Morgan covering the healthcare sector with a focus on life science companies, and at BTIG (now U.S. Bank) covering the technology sector with a focus on software companies.

Janet holds the Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) designation from the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA) and the Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) accreditation from the Licensing Executives Society (LES).

Janet received her B.S. in Economics with concentrations in Finance and Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. While in college, she was a NCAA Division I varsity athlete on the women’s golf team.
